Day 5 - Whale Watching

We have been watching whales from the shore but today we went on our first whale watching expedition on a boat.  The problem I have is I never select the correct side of the ship for whale watching and today was no exception.  I went port, most whales went starboard.  I still saw plenty of whales but I also spent a lot of time running backing and forth from one side to the other.  I wore plenty of sunscreen and my hat.  My mom went commando on the sunscreen and she is quite red tonight.  I moved from bright white to off-white. The whales were quite active and I was able to get a few shots.  Lots of whale calves jumping around.
We saw several competitive pods.  The male whales outnumber the female whales 2 to 1 so when a female is ready to mate, she attracts lots of males who compete around here, head slapping, jousting each other, splashing and showing off in an effort to attract her attention.

The weather was perfect.  The ocean calm.  The whales active.  It was a perfect day.  After the whale watch we went to Local Boys for another shaved ice.  They have a plethora of flavors but we just love the lava flow concotion.  Back to the condo to rest, eat and plan for the tomorrow.  Do we head to the beach or Iao Valley?  Perhaps a drive up country or a visit to South Maui?  Decisions, decisions, decisions.
